Celebrating the birth anniversary of a towering figure in Indian art: Jagdish Swaminathan.
A highly influential artist, poet, painter, and art critic, Jagdish Swaminathan played a pivotal role in shaping Indian modern art. He was instrumental in building the Roopankar Museum at Bharat Bhavan, a multi-arts complex in Bhopal, and promoting Indian tribal and indigenous art. Swaminathan’s artistic vision was to disengage from revivalism and Western influences in Indian modern art. His art is a blend of folk and tribal motifs with modernist sensibilities, creating a unique visual language. Swaminathan’s canvases often featured bold, pure colours and simplified geometric forms that referenced both Tantric symbols and abstract concepts. His works have been widely exhibited across India.
